Slum Beach Posse, the Southern California & Hawaii based musical collective featuring DENM, pro-surfer Landon McNamara, Jesse James Pariah and Benny Ranks release their new single “The Ocean” today, Friday September 18th.
The new single offers a taste of the group’s highly anticipated upcoming album Slum Beach Posse Vol. 2, an 11-track studio album set to release on October 23rd, via Slum Beach Records and Controlled Substance Sound Labs, the independent artist distribution division of Silverback Music.
“The Ocean” follows the initial release of the first single “Sun Come,” and illuminates the core members spiritual reverence for the ocean, an inspiration which has played a vital role within their coastal DNA. While the constantly changing nature of the ocean is utilized as a metaphor for navigating the highs and lows of life, the song captures the reflective soul of the Posse’s ethos, while maintaining a laid-back acoustic vibe that has become the foundation of the band’s evolving sonic palate.
“If you really watch the ocean through the seasons and the years, you learn a lot about the ebbs and flows of life,” explains DENM. “Some days are warm and calm, some days are cold and stormy, and some days are pure fun. You just have to learn to ride the tides as they come and go. Life is like the ocean, so we wrote a song about it.”
Slum Beach Posse Vol. 2 continues the unlikely story that began when DENM assembled a crew of surfers, musicians, outsiders, and longtime friends around a shared love of music and surf culture. Echoing the early formation of rap Wu-Tang Clan and NWA mixed with the strength of Slum Beach Posse comes from bringing together artists with their own voices, personalities, and stories under one collective vision, with DENM serving as the producer and architect behind the project.
The ensemble of DENM, Landon McNamara, Jesse James Pariah, and Benny Ranks first came together during a week-long jam and recording session at McNamara’s home on Hawaii’s North Shore. What began as an organic creative experiment eventually became Slum Beach Posse Vol. 1, a breakout project that has amassed more than 40 million combined streams across digital platforms.
For Vol. 2, the Posse returned to Oahu and spent considerably more time together creating the record, allowing the chemistry between its members to evolve while expanding the cooperative to include appearances from featured guests Kanaka Fyah and Boostive.
“‘Sun Come’ was the first of 11 songs that make up Slum Beach Posse Vol. 2. The album was recorded in North Shore Oahu, HI, and we really got to dive deep and spend intentional time creating this record,” DENM previously said of the project. “We’re thankful for these songs and for each other. It’s a very special project for us, and we’re stoked to finally share it with everyone.”
